Hi, I’m Todd Graves. It’s 1993. I’m frustrated, out of money, and on the verge of quitting golf, the game I’ve loved since 11.
No one has spent more money on golf instruction. I’m discouraged. I’ve gone to the biggest names in swing coaching, but each one teaches me different approaches without any rhyme or reason as to why. There’s no biomechanics, no systematic approach – just tips and quick fixes.
I’m living in Dallas at the time, bartending at night, trying to make money so I can play golf during the day. But I’m ready to throw in the towel.
I was shocked. Matthew didn’t respect anybody
as a ball striker.
So I put the tape in my VCR.
Moe’s unique swing changed my golf game and
my life.
Moe’s single plane swing was strange but
AMAZING.
Moe Norman was a Canadian legend and a man revered by golf professionals worldwide as one of
the greatest ball-strikers in history and one of the
most eccentric and colorful characters in the
annals of sport.
Moe’s numbers tell the tale: With 17 holes in one,
three scores of 59, four scores of 61, and more
than 30 course records during his career, he dominated Canadian golf through the mid
20th century.
One of Moe’s fans included Tiger Woods, who said, “Only two players have ever truly owned their swings –
Moe Norman and Ben Hogan.” Lee Trevino said,
“When you talk about Moe Norman, you are
talking about a legend.”
Then, in 1994, I met Moe at a golf clinic. He appeared to have no concern for how he dressed, and he hit with his clubs scattered around him, like junk.
But over and over again, I watched Moe Norman hit the greatest, purist golf shots ever.
After the clinic, I walk up to the legend and say, “Your swing is the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in golf.”
Moe, who spoke a bit like Rain Man, replies, “I know, I’m greatest in the world. Greatest in the world.”
“Hey, would you mind if I grabbed your eight iron off the ground and hit some shots with it?” I ask.
Moe was agreeable, so I do.
After watching me hit a few, he says,
“It’s me without a belly. It’s me without a belly.”
In 2004, I went to see Moe on his birthday. I had an awful feeling it might be the last time I ever saw him. His health was in decline. We usually played nine holes, but Moe wanted to play 18, which was rare. After the ninth hole, Moe says to me,
“I never thought I’d see it. I never thought I’d see it.”
“See what, Moe?”
“Somebody dedicating their life to my swing.”
“Well, that’s what I’ve done,” I say back. “My goal is to teach as many people in the world about your golf swing. Your swing will help a lot of people.”
Moe looked at me and said,
I answered with a feeling of purpose and gratitude for the man who gave me back my love of golf. “Moe, we’ll see what one man can do.”
Two months later, I got a call to tell me my dear friend and mentor Moe passed away.
My older brother Tim, also a golf professional, learned Moe’s simple swing and was astounded by his improvement. As we continued to play the tour events in the U.S., requests for lessons on our unique single-plane swing became too great to handle while also playing professionally.
So in 2000, we decided to go all-in on a golf school dedicated to teaching Moe’s swing, complimented by my brother’s expertise in the short game. We got a truck and trailer and started doing roadside golf schools.
Today, primarily due to Tim’s business acumen, Graves Golf has locations across the U.S., over a hundred thousand students, and sales of 7M in 2020.
Moe, he asked me, “What can ONE man do?”
Every day, Tim and I work to see how far and wide TWO men, brothers, can share the swing of a legendary ball-striker with the world.
With locations across the United States and a headquarters in Edmond, Oklahoma, Graves Golf has developed a sizable following of devoted followers.
Most golfers attending schools at Graves Golf locations across the United States are frustrated by traditional instruction. But with the Graves’ in-depth knowledge of The Moe Norman Single Plane Swing® and their expertise in all facets of the game, students at Graves Golf make lasting and genuine improvements that they’ve always dreamed of.
