What is it about this game of golf that inspires a five year old girl to use the money she made from a lemon aid stand to buy her very first putter? 

Or a seventy-five year old to wake up before dawn, in order to be in the first group off the tee box? 

Or a young man from Canada to hit over 500 golf balls every day of his life? 

While I was instructing at a Graves Golf Premier School a few months ago, one of our students, made such a profound impression on me …. It was the last hour of the last day, when we have the students work on the “One Thing” needed to improve their game. One of the students, I will call him “John”, a veteran with some physical issues, was working on “Red Zone-Green Zone” walk-ins for a tee shot. In order to tee-up the ball, John had to physically get down on all fours, with hands shaking, he put the tee in the ground, than the ball on the tee. He did this over and over and over again with the same conviction that Moe must have had all those years ago.

When I drove him back to the clubhouse after the school ended, he “Thanked” me and the other instructors. He said “the opportunity to go to this school was a dream come true, and, something he would never forget!”

Why do we play golf?

Everyone has their own reason & story, however for me, it is being outdoors for four-plus hours, or to be more exact, not sitting in front of a computer for those hours. It’s appreciating that the hard work we all do day-in and day-out, rewards us the opportunity to be able to play this wonderful yet sometimes frustrating game…To achieve our short term goals and embrace the challenge to strive for perfection… All to have a Better Quality of Life!

I would like to “Thank John”!

I don’t know why he plays this game, but I will never forget him. 

I do know that it is because of John and all the other members like John, that I’m a Graves Golf Instructor!
