Wax On / Wax Off

Want to talk in this practice tip about how we learn the golf swing. We have discussed many times before, but it was of interest Todd, myself, Brent, Ken Martin and the Director of Golf at the Cowboy Club (Ft. Worth) (previously the director of instruction at the Byron Nelson Golf Academy) sat down to dinner last night and discussed how our students learn. Those that are effective learners and those that have a little more difficulty mastering what we are teaching them. It was interesting that the conversation seems to always come back to what Todd and I call the “Wax On/Wax Off” theory. We didn’t term this phrase (in fact, I think we may have heard it on the golf channel years ago) – but it is SO TRUE it seems to fit all golfers trying to learn any methodology.

Let me explain.

Do you remember the movie “Karate Kid”. (I know I’m going to mess up the names, so I’ll apologize early).

Ralph Maccio (Daniel LaRusso/the karate kid) is getting beat up at his new school by a bunch of kids that know karate. (At that time he had known nothing about martial arts). The gentleman and resident handyman Mr. M (a master of martial arts) decides to help him learn to defend himself.

One of the first scenes is the karate kid showing up at Mr. Miyagi house and looking at all his awards, prizes, martial arts material, etc.. He is “pumped up”… (Sounds like one of our students coming to our school or getting our instructional material, right….)

After talking to Mr. Miyagi for a while, the karate kid (novice right now..) states is a willingness to learn.

The next scene, you see Mr. Miyagi handing the karate kid a bucket and sponge and tells him to wash all his collection of cars (about 6 sitting outside his house).

As he is washing the cars, there is a VERY SPECIFIC way he is supposed to use the sponge to wash the cars (a circular motion to the right with the right and to the left with the left hand).

The karate kid finishes washing the cars. Now he is ready to LEARN KARATE!!

The next scene you see, Mr. Miyagi is handing him a pale of wax and a wax sponge and cloth. Mr. Miyagi very specifically tells him to put the wax on the cars with the right hand in a right circular motion and to take the wax off with the left hand in a left handed circular motion. He is VERY SPECIFIC with the directions.

The karate kid starts waxing. As he is on the 2nd car, Mr. Miyagi comes out and corrects his waxing – he has lost focus and is just “rubbing” the wax on the car. Mr. Miyagi describes in VERY DETAIL of how to put wax on the car and how to take wax off the car. He calls it WAX ON (right hand)/WAX OFF (left hand). Wax on, wax off, wax on, wax off, repeating over and over as he walks away.

(Hopefully most of you remember the scene as I am butchering the description…)

The next scene, it is now dark and the karate kid is mad. His arms, hands, elbows, shoulders are very obviously sore. In fact, he can hardly lift them. He has washed and waxed cars all day and learned nothing about karate. Mr. Miyagi says good night to him and they part ways…

The next day, the karate kid shows up again to Mr. Miyagi’s house. He is a little bit sarcastic this time and not sure he wants to be there. Mr. Miyagi takes him out to his large wooden deck/path and describes the process of sanding the deck by hand. Circular motion to the right with the right hand, and then circular motion to the left with the left hand. During the day, Mr. Miyagi again comes out many times to check on the sanding and to correct the sanding motion of the karate kid.

The 2nd night is now there. The karate kid is furious. He has spent two days washing, waxing and sanding this “old man’s” (as he says) car and deck and has learned nothing about karate. And he is about to go to school again and get beat up by those who do know something.

Mr. Miyagi comes out to say good night again and the karate kid lets him have it. “What are you doing?” “You’re a nothing, you only have me here doing your dirt work!” “I wasted my time for two days for absolutely nothing!”

Mr. Miyagi walks over to the karate kid (very calm) and has the karate kid show him the motions he has learned the previous two days. The circular to the right with the right hand and circular to the left with the left hand. Karate kid shows him the motions.

Now, Mr. Miyagi stands in front of him and says, you have just learned the fundamental blocks of karate – the core/basics of all martial arts, the key to success.

The final scene (of what we’ll talk about) Mr. Miyagi stands in front of the karate kid and punches at his head numerous times – with each blow, the karate kid using the WAX ON/WAX OFF technique and blocks every punch thrown at him. Mr. Miyagi backs off, bows and says the lessons will continue tomorrow.

To me, this is one of the coolest scenes in a movie – think of what went on and think of what you are trying to do to learn your golf game.

It is ABSOLUTELY a WAX ON/WAX OFF scenario. And all good golf instructors you talk to will tell you “I can explain the swing until I am blue in the face, over and over and over again, but it ultimately comes down to the student repeating the PROPER MOVES over and over and over and over again until it becomes a habit. And once you think it has become a habit – go sand the porch – do it again and again and again and again.

Let’s compare the story I just talked about to what we are trying to accomplish.

1st – Karate kid is getting beat up at school by the “bullies” – maybe your buddies are beating you at golf, maybe not. Maybe you are just frustrated with your golf game – maybe you just want to get better for a personal goal, whatever the reason,you have made a decision to get better at golf.

2nd – Karate kid asks for help from the local handyman… call the GGA your “golf handyman”…

3rd – Karate kid goes to his house and sees all his awards, etc.. – Come to our academy, we’d love to show you all our awards, but more importantly, our Moe “stuff” (videos, pictures, clubs, etc..)

4th – The karate kid is given a task by the “master” teacher. He is not explained why he is doing the task, but he told VERY SPECIFICALLY how to perform the task. When he is doing wrong he is corrected. What are your tasks/drills? We have many. We have listed them often and “preach” them again and again and again. Examples – SPPT drill, leverage bag drill, etc… You can see these on our past e-tips on our website. EVEN BETTER – these drills and motions can be seen on our instructional material – Total Game Overview, 7 Principles of Golf Improvement, Troubles and Solutions. This is a perfect example of how 1

picture is worth a 1,000 words, but one moving picture (seeing in action) is worth 1,000+++ pictures. This is your reference, how you see the WAX ON/WAX OFF.

5th – Mr. Miyagi has him do the task over and over and over again. Until it what – becomes a subconscious habit. You need to focus on particular areas of your swing. You will have weak areas and strong areas. For example – maybe your grip is not very good, but your take away is. You need to FOCUS on a correct grip – maybe get a grip training club, look in a mirror OFTEN, check the grip every time AFTER you hit a shot… there are many ways to check and drill over and over and over again on all areas of the swing.

6th- During the process, many times the karate kid thought Mr. Miyagi (the master teacher) was crazy. “Why is he having me do this?” “I am wasting my time”. Let me give you a hint – there is a method to our madness. We are not here to waste your time. We are here to teach you the fundamentally correct positions of Moe Norman’s Golf Swing – some ways may seem “very unusual” – but guess what – we have seen dramatic positive results with these drills and methods in MANY students and ourselves in the past – and better than that – it is what Moe taught us… trust us, there is a method to our madness.

Would you have ever imagined swinging a piece of PVC to learn the golf swing???? And it works – WAX ON/WAX OFF!!

7th – Finally to the amazement of the karate kid – when put to the test, he has learned some basic fundamentals of karate. He is amazed… Question for you is how much time do you think you need to spend doing a particular drill/movement over and over and over until it becomes a habit for you??

I can tell you from experience, it is more time than you think. Remember Ben Hogan’s theory – working on the same movement every day (one thing) for 21 days starts to create a habit….

Here’s your homework – you’ve got a little time (not due for a few weeks at least – or at least when it gets warm enough to start playing golf again..)

  1. Figure out what you need to work on in your swing. Study our video(s), ask us a lot of questions, call/email anytime, go to our chatroom, come to a school/camp/lesson – do whatever it takes to figure out what you need to work on.
  2. Set a goal or two on what you want to accomplish. Can be very specific or not (depends on what you want to do…) and time period can be short or long – again depends on you… but at least set a goal.
  3. Start working on the “fix” – figure out how to “Wax On”/“Wax Off” properly. It is not hard – JUST DO IT RIGHT. That is what we are here for – ask us, use our instructional material…

Last hint/suggestion – I would rather you do NOTHING – THAN DO IT WRONG. It is not hard, but you need to learn to do it correctly. Make it easy on yourself….

How to Read Greens

After the August e-tip I received quite a few questions about “How to Read Greens?”

Thought I’d write this practice tip on some ways to learn how to read greens and some helpful hints/drills that will help you read greens better.

Reading greens is not difficult if you have learned through a “trial and error/ trial and succeed” type process. Let me explain with a few examples I have witnessed and put into my teachings from some of the best putters in the world.

First – You need to test your putting. Remember – good putters have the following – 1. Square face at impact, 2. A good putting path, and 3. Good speed.

To test these, it is pretty simple –

  1. Checking Putter Face Alignment – Place a yardstick on the ground (flat ground). Put a golf ball at the end and on top of the yardstick (for example on the one inch mark). Set up to the ball and putt down the yardstick. You should have no problem keeping the ball on the yardstick. If you have a problem, you need to work on your putter face squareness at impact.
  2. Good Putting Path – Place two tees in the green about 10 feet from the hole. The tees should be apart the distance of your width of your putter plus 1/4 inch. In other words, you are making a “gate” to putt through. Now place a ball in the middle and just in front of the tees. Putt toward the hole. You should not hit the tees. If you do, you need to work on your path.
  3. Good Speed – This is the most important factor to reading greens. Take 10 golf balls – go 20 to 30 feet from a hole. Putt toward the hole. At least 7 of 10 golf balls should be made or should come to rest within 12 inches PAST the hole. If you cannot get these results, you need to check the following – Are you hitting the putt in the middle of the putter face? This is very easy to check – place a piece of masking tape on the face of the putter or pour some babypowder on the face of your putter. Putt a few golf balls. Check the marks on the face of your putter – they should be on the sweet spot of the putter face (typically about 1 quarter size circle in the middle of the putter). If not, you need to check your putting fundamentals and repair them to get a majority of your putts to hit the sweet spot of the putter. Remember – missing the sweet spot by as little as 1/4 inch can make a putt come up 10 feet short from 30 feet on average speed greens….

Okay – now that you have checked the 3 keys to good putting (and passed them) – let’s talk about how to teach yourself to read greens.

Reading greens is an “art” that is acquired through a process of what I call “trial and error/trial and succeed”. Let me explain.

First – remember – 60% of break occurs within the last 3 feet of a putt. But, there is an issue here. That 3 feet should be 2 feet before the hole and up to 12 inches past the hole (with good speed). Problem is if we don’t have good speed. For example, if you hit a putt too hard – goes 3 feet past the hole if missed, 60% of the break will occur past the hole. Meaning, only 40% of the break will occur between the ball and the hole, 60% of the break after – very hard to read with consistency – in fact, impossible to read with consistency, if you don’t have consistent/good speed.

So – if you want to be a good reader of greens, you MUST FIRST HAVE GOOD SPEED CONTROL on the greens.

Second – How to you teach yourself how to read greens?

I believe the best putter in the world is Tiger Woods – if you question that, just watch him putt under pressure, or count how many putts he makes in a given round… he makes more “long” putts in a given round than most professionals make in a tournament. I saw a stat last week – Tiger won the Western Open a few weeks ago – he made 49 of 50 putts from 8 feet and inside – WOW!!! To be the best putter – you must be the best “reader” of greens…

Now, how did Tiger teach himself to read greens??

Let me tell you what I have seen being around Tiger and watching him in the past on the putting green (I have put most of these practices in my preround routines also…)

  1. The first thing he does when he gets to a tournament/round of golf is he works on the speed of the greens. The speed of the greens will change – even from day to day. He putts mid to long putts to “learn” the speed of the greens. He continues to putt these putts until he has developed consistent speed. (You must get used to the speed of today’s greens – especially when playing public/private type courses that might be mowed one day, not the next, or even if the greens are being played in the morning/afternoon or evening – the pace of the greens will change.)
  2. Next – he takes two golf balls and does the tee drill as described above (putting between tees to check his putter path). He does this for a few minutes to make sure his putter face and path are good.
  3. Now – he goes to the reading greens part. He takes ONE ball. Goes about 10 feet from the hole. He reads the putt, and putts the ONE ball toward the hole. If he makes the putt he goes to another spot (typically 90* from where he is to the same hole). If he misses the putt – here is the part most golfers DO NOT DO. He goes back to the same spot, reads the putt again, and putts again. He continues to do this until he makes the putt. He does this from all 4 “corners” around the hole – so typically he will have a left to right putt, right to left putt, downhill putt and uphill putt. After making all 4 putts from around the hole (only one ball, reading the putt each time and putting until he makes it) he goes to a different hole and now putts from about 15 feet. He does the same “four corner” drill. After making the 4 putts from 15 feet – he does the same from about 20 feet on a third hole.

Let’s talk about this drill Tiger is performing (to be honest, I have seen many professionals/good players do this drill in practice many, many times – in fact, I watched Dr. Gil Morgan do this drill for about 2 hours one day…). This drill is teaching the player how to read greens. The reason it is teaching him to read greens is because he is putting only one ball – reading every putt and when he misses a putt – he goes back to the same spot, reads it again and putts it again. He does this over and over until he makes the putt. This is the “trial and error/trial and succeed” method I described above.

Tiger (and any other golfer performing this drill) is teaching is eyes to match his mind to match his stroke… In other words, he is training his eyes to tell his brain what the putt is going to do (reading the putt) and then testing it. If it is a success – he goes on. If it is a failure – he does it again – this process is a process of training the eyes to read the greens.

What else does this drill do:

  1. Many golfers are good at reading some putts, not others. The putts that “match” their stroke or “eye” (for example, most right handed golfers putt right to left putts much better than left to right putts) are much easier than ones that don’t. This drill works on all types of putts – as you are circling the hole, you will work on different breaks and uphill/downhill putts.
  2. The drill builds a “positive” thought over the putt. Most golfers will putt at a hole, miss a couple of putts and go on. You are not moving to another putt until you make the previous putt – leaving with a positive thought.

We putt on many different types of surfaces. Bermuda, Bent, Zoysia, Poana, (weeds..dirt..). All these surfaces putt and read different (some have grain, some don’t – some can be affected by wind, some aren’t – some are faster when dry, some aren’t. The key is to teach yourself how to read greens by a “trial and error/trial and succeed” type process. The process is set up to improve your reading of greens and ultimately your overall game by lowering your number of putts each round.

Lastly – couple “tricks of the trade” –

These “tricks of the trade” are used by many good players and will enhance your green reading:

  1. Circle the hole when you are reading the putt. In other words – read from behind ball, then go on the otherside of the hole and read from behind the hole – when you return to the ball to putt go the opposite way you came to the hole. In other words, circle the hole so you can see the putt from all angles. Many professionals will tell you your “feet” will help you feel the slope of the green and will enhance your green reading.
  2. Watch what the other putts are doing on the green (and chips). When you are on the green, watch what the other golfer’s putts (and chips) are doing – how they are breaking – how fast or slow they are, etc… Let the other golfer’s shots “educate” you. If you don’t think the good players do this – you are greatly mistaken. A few years ago, Jack Nicklaus was paired with Arnold Palmer at the Masters. On one of the greens Jack was lined up to putt his ball, back off, looked at Arnold Palmer and said “Come on Arnie, you’re practically standing on my line”. (Palmer was trying to “sneak a peek” down Jacks line when he was putting to give him a read).
  3. For many – on mid to long putts – go to about 5 feet from the hole – pick a spot on the green you think the putt needs to travel over to make it, hover your putter over that spot and practice stroke from there. Do not touch the green with your putter as it is a penalty, but practice putting on your line from about 5 feet will give you a much better feel for the break around the hole (which is typically the majority of break…)
  4. Shade your eyes when you are lining up a putt. Many wear hats which help, some wear sun glasses (actually one of big reasons I wear mine) because getting the glare off your eyes will help you see the putt better. As they say, wide open eyes read better than eyes half closes (squinting).

Process and Progress of GGA Alumni – The Path

This past Monday and Tuesday we had the privilege of again teaching a group of our alumni at our academy in Orlando. This is always a treat for us as we get to see the improvement of our students and help them continue on their path to great golf games.

What I want to talk about in this Practice Tip is what I always tell our students to focus on… How are other golfers similar to themselves are getting better and what do you (as a student) need to “copy” or imitate to follow the same path?

I believe, as most instructors believe, it is not about “reinventing the wheel” but rather using what is out there working for others to work for you… I took some statistics from those attending our alumni school… thought this might help those with their path to a better game.

(If you doubt the stats or opinions we are suggesting – remember that the alumni who attended the school are reading this also….)

1. There were 12 alumni who attended our school this week (both male and female) at our school.

  • Age range: 45 to 75 years
  • Past history with the GGA – Minimal
  • One 3 day school in past up to one student who has attended five 3 day schools and 3 Build Your Game Camps.
  • Handicap of Students – Range – 8 to a 34.
  • Handicap reduction (with GGA) – Of those interviewed: 4 had a reduction of around 25%, 3 had a reduction of 50% and 1 had reduction of 60%.
    • (Example – one noted reducing handicap from 20 when he began with GGA to a 14 … approx. 25% reduction)

 

2. Todd and I discussed following the first day – With minimal exception (one student) all the alumni had GOOD to VERY GOOD Grips (hand placement on the clubs). This was absolutely FANTASTIC to us… You have heard us state hundreds of times – we primarily teach the grip – seems like 75% ++ of our teaching revolves around changing the hands to proper positions that lead to good swings/ on plane with leverage and speed, etc… Our alumni group had solved the issue of the grip (or were well on their way…).

* Why??? I will be 100% biased here… and yes, you can take this as a sales tactic – that is 100% fine with me – all but one has our Training Grip – and they all stated they use it frequently. In fact, many brought their own to our school and I could tell they had been used a lot… THAT WAS AWESOME!!!! And obviously – they have been told many times through our instructional material and in person (maybe “harped at” is more like it) the importance of a good grip.

3. Their set ups were for the most part good. Now, you noticed I didn’t say great… most still had some work to do in this area… but they were again well on their way to getting a good single axis set up. I will call it “tweaking” their setups, rather than building or overhauling…

4. Todd put each student on video both days (we are able to do this as we don’t have to cover the basics as we do in our 3 day schools, etc..) and the majority quickly realized what they needed to work on – meaning, they could see quickly their swing faults and knew how to make adjustments with some help.

This is what we call perception vs. reality in the golf swing. Perceiving what you need to work on and putting it into “reality” in their swing…

* We believe the ease of this perception vs. reality and putting into effect is because our alumni typically have a very good knowledge of our teaching material – they take time to study the Total Game Overview and 7 principles… and call/email and/or visit our chatroom when they have questions … Fact – Of the 12 alumni at our school – 8 visit our forum frequently and most of these ask weekly questions.

5. Drills, drills, and more drills. It became very obvious, very fast, that most worked on our suggested drills quite often. For example – when we discussed and suggested the PVC pivot point drill – after minimal explanation and example – most mastered without any problem. And most stated they perform drills quite often at home, (hopefully in front of a mirror, etc..). You could definitely tell the majority knew to work on and master individual positions rather than being overwhelmed with the entire swing…

Couple More Interesting Points:

  1. We talked about the Cause/Effect relationship on Day #1. Was great to see so many of our alumni look at themselves on video and say about certain issues in their swings “That is an effect – I can’t fix that – but can fix the Cause which will, in turn, solve the effect” Please, please, please – determine what are Causes and what are Effects in your own swing – Remember you can fix the Cause, not the Effect. Fixing the Cause will, in turn, fix the Effect.
  2. The majority of our alumni have learned how to “pace” themselves. Maybe again, after enough of our “harping” hopefully they realize it is not how many golf balls you hit, but the quality of the practice you put into hitting the balls. For example, was very common to see a student hit the leverage bag a few times, swing the PVC a couple of times and then hit a couple of balls… not a ball beating session.

Again – this is not a typical GGA practice tip – but we believe there is some VERY VALUABLE points/advice to be learned from fellow single plane golfers just like you… again – don’t reinvent the wheel, but rather use what is there, put into your “path” and go along with them to MUCH BETTER golf!!!

Short Game Winter Practice

As everyone knows who has been at one of our schools, read past instructional material by us, has our instructional material (TGOV or 7 principles) or just spends a little time at any of our academies – we continually stress building the ENTIRE game rather than just parts of the game. As we always say, you will only be as good as the weakest part of your game… With this said, we many times fall into the trap of focusing only on our long game and letting our short game slip a little – or worse, putting very little practice into our short game.

Fact – 43% of scoring occurs on the putting green (with the putter) for an average golfer (20 handicap golfer). As you handicap goes up, this percentage increases… for a scratch golfer – about 40% of scoring occurs with the putter.

And – as this is the time of year we get minimal outdoor practice, let’s talk about setting up a practice station and method to improve our putting (can be done at home , in the office, on the road… in the winter or any time of the year).

First, we recommend you obtain the following “tools” for your putting station. Putting mat (or smooth carpet in your house), yardstick, sharpie marker, 2 rubber bands, golf balls, 2 x 4 (about 2 feet long), DVD, and a magazine.

Next, draw a straight line on your putting mat from the hole back to the end of the mat (or at least 6 to 8 feet) – (would definitely recommend getting a mat for this, not sure too many spouses would be happy putting a line on the house’s carpet..)

Next, place 2 rubber bands on your putter face about 1 to 2 inches apart. You can start wide (2 inches) and then work down.

The center point between the 2 rubber bands should be the sweet spot of the putter. When you are placing the rubber bands on the putter – do not make them smooth – in other words – if you hit the rubber band in your stroke, you want the ball to go off line. When practicing with the rubber bands on the putter it will show you if you are making contact with the sweet spot of your putter (making sure you don’t heel or toe your putter which leads to VERY inconsistent putting, in particular, distance control).

Next, take a golf ball (or few golf balls) and draw a line around the ball with the sharpie. Make the line as circular around the ball as possible. You could use a range ball (with lines on it), but prefer you use the same type of golf balls you play with (to develop feel).

Now let’s talk about drills to work on your alignment, stance and stroke.

“DVD Drill” To determine proper ball position, place a DVD on your mat and place a golf ball in the middle of the DVD. When you look down on the DVD (will reflect) you should not see your left eye (for right hands – right eye for left-handers) – the ball will block the reflection of your lead eye. You will see your trail eye just behind the ball in the reflection. In other words, this is a great check to make sure the ball is under your eye line and slightly forward in your stance. This drill works for short, long and side saddle putting. You will stand a little more inside (further from the ball) with a belly style putter – but still want to get as close as possible.This drill also will help determine if your putter is too long – for many, if they can’t get the golf ball in a good position – could mean the putter (length) is too long.

“Magazine Drill” After you have determined the proper distance from the golf ball, lay a magazine down next to your toes. For most, an average size magazine will fit between the toes and putter (leaving enough room to stroke the putt). Ideally – find a magazine (size) that will fit exactly between your toes and heel of your putter when you set up over the ball. You can then use this check anytime you are practicing putting – to make sure you are the right distance from the ball – just lay down the magazine – put your toes against the magazine and heel on another side.

“2 x 4 Drill” Take the 2 x 4 and place parallel to the line in the mat with just enough room to stroke the putt with the toe of the putter as close to the board as you are comfortable. As you perform this drill, the putter should go back straight and then arc slightly inside (for longer putts) in the backswing. In the through swing the putter will return to square at impact, go straight through and then arc slightly inward (towards your toes) for longer putts. Checkpoint in this drill is the putter never touches the 2 x 4, but stays very close to it.

“Line Drill” Finally – the line drill. You can do either with the “lined ball” or unmarked ball. I recommend both. Place the ball on the line on putt.

When you putt check four things:

  1. You stay VERY still during the putt – minimal movement in the body.
  2. The ball rolls down the line to the hole. Does not go right or
  3. The putter head goes back (backswing) down the line (slightly inward arc for longer putts) and then returns to square at impact, rides the line in the through swing (arcs slightly in for longer putts).
  4. If you used the marked golf ball – should roll straight into the hole – should not “wobble” on the way

These drills work for all forms of putting – short, long, belly and side saddle. In fact, as you examine your putting and putting stroke in the offseason, it may be a great time to “experiment” with other forms. The roll of the golf ball, path of the putter, etc… doesn’t lie. With these drills and tools you can see what form of putting gives you the best roll and chance to improve your scoring in the upcoming year.
