The Single Plane Swing – Moe Norman & Bryson DeChambeau

Force = Mass x Acceleration

Two weeks ago at Winged Foot in the 2020 U.S. Open, Bryson DeChambeau accomplished what only two other men have – winning the NCAA Individual Championship, the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open in a career, placing himself in the same category as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.  Bryson didn’t just win the Major Championship, he defied logic in many ways.

The one area that comes to most of our minds is how far he hits the golf ball.  As Bryson calls it, “the bomb and gouge mentality.”  He has taken his game to new heights by adding weight to his body and increasing his ability to create rotational speed.  In fact, he was just under 200 lbs. at the beginning of the year and he now weighs in at almost 240 lbs.  Why did he do this?  It wasn’t just coincidence, as Bryson studies and researches everything and why he has the nickname, “The Mad Scientist.”

It all started 20+ years ago with Tiger Woods, and now golf has transitioned into a power game.  The last five U.S. Open winners have been long drivers of the golf ball including Dustin Johnson, twice by Brooks Koepka, and last year by Gary Woodland.  However, Bryson’s distance is extreme, and Rory McIlroy attested to this earlier this year at Colonial when he said, “He hit one into the wind on 11.  I hit a really good one and probably hit it like 315, 320.  DeChambeau must have flew my ball by 40 yards.  He hit it like 370, 375 into the wind.  It was crazy.  It’s unbelievable.”  This coming from one of the longest and most accurate drivers of the golf ball in the last decade, Rory.

What is probably the most fascinating part of all of this is that when most golfers add length, they tend to always lose accuracy.  Think of the World Long Drive hitters, out of eight shots, how many of them actually land in the 55 to 60-yard-wide grid?  Maybe one or two.  On the PGA Tour, the fairways average 25-30 yards wide.  In 2019, Bryson averaged 299.4 off the tee and his tee shot accuracy was 58.3%.  This year, Bryson has averaged 321.2 off the tee and now hits 60.4% of the fairways.  Another great stat is that in 2019, his Strokes Gained off the Tee was .420 and this year he has gained 1.009 Strokes on the field.  With these stats, Bryson is already one shot ahead of the field each round he plays.  Talk about having an advantage.

How can he hit it further now and be more accurate off the tee?  The only solution to this is how he does it – the science and biomechanics behind it.  With Bryson having a scientific/physics mind, he will admit that ‘The Golfing Machine’ book changed his life, and this is what he said about it:

“That’s where my swing came from. That’s where I thought of my methods, and everything I’ve worked so hard on in developing my swing. My hands look like they’re high at address, but I just want them to be in the same position they’ll be in at impact. I don’t want my hands starting low at the beginning of my swing and then getting high at impact. I just want to start them high and then return to that position. It takes a little time at first, but once you get used to it, it’s the most efficient way to return the clubhead to the ball. Think about it this way: ‘If you were to design a machine to swing a golf club, how would that machine do it?’ You wouldn’t program the machine to have a bunch of excess movement. You’d build it so it’s simple and repeatable. That’s what my swing is.”

What’s interesting about Bryson’s findings is that what he is describing is exactly how the greatest ball striker of all-time swung the club – Moe Norman and what Graves Golf has taught for over 20 years – The Single Plane Swing.  Let’s take a look:

Above you can see how Bryson and Moe both begin with the club shaft aligned with the middle of the back.  This is also where impact is.  When Bryson talks about starting and impacting on the same plane – this is the definition of Single Plane.  To make the golf swing efficient, there is not a simpler way than starting the club shaft on the same plane that it will make impact.

Depicted above is impact of Bryson and Moe.  At impact, the club shaft has returned to the same point in which it began.  The club shaft directly in line with the middle of the back.  This is no different than a child picking up a stick and trying to hit a rock that is on the ground.  A child will point their arms in the direction of the object and make a straight-line motion to hit the object.  The simplest way.

Bryson not only points the club and arms directly at the ball at address, he also positions the back of the lead hand, which is aligned with the club face, at the target. Aligning the club face with the back of the lead hand and pointing the back of the hand at the target at impact – this is what Moe called the “Rod” position.  The alignment of the club face, club shaft, lead hand, lead arm, and lead shoulder.  This is the same position the “Rod” will return at impact.

Finally, by starting and impacting on the same plane and establishing the “Rod” position at address, Bryson has reduced rotations and unnecessary movement of the body from address to impact.

Biomechanics is the science of the body’s movement.  Moving the body in the most efficient way is considered an “Ideal Biomechanical Advantage”.  This term nicely describes Bryson’s swing movement.  As “unconventional” as many golf enthusiasts consider Bryson’s golf swing, it is actually natural and ordinary.  It’s really just common sense.

FREE SINGLE PLANE CLUB FITTING

Whether looking to fit/replace a single club to an entire set, from a putter to a driver to your irons, wedges, etc.. it is ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL that the club(s) is fit to YOUR individualized swing and single plane specifications.

An UNfit club will hinder your improvement process, an UNfit club will hinder your golf game, an UNfit club will not allow you to reach your potential, an UNfit club can and many times will actually physical hurt you (tendonitis in elbows and wrists are many times causes and exaggerated by club with improper lie angles), and UNfit club is basically worthless to you. I don’t care how much you spent for the golf club(s) – if they are not individually fit to you – they are worthless to your game – and worse than that, can and many times will actually “hurt” you.

The Graves Golf Academy has custom fitting programs established with most major manufacturers in the golf industry. And many of the manufacturers install our grips in their custom department (no other instruction group can say that….). We have worked VERY HARD to set this customizing system up for our customers, students, etc. anyone interested in the single plane golf swing.

Also, because of the amount of equipment we sell from each manufacturer, we are many times offered equipment at a reduced rate for our customers. We are always able to match industry pricing and many times able to beat the pricing. We are also many times able to offer clubs at a significantly reduced price (last year’s models, etc. as these manufactures know how many clubs we sell and “hold some back” for us). Please watch our newsletters (bimonthly) for these specials – as they typically don’t last long as many are interested in these special pricings.

Customization done at the manufacturer (Callaway, Taylormade, Titleist, etc..) is free through the Graves Golf, there is no added cost for the GGA grips installed and customized at the manufacturers. Plus, there is no shipping charge (within US) and no tax (outside of OK) through Graves Golf.

Bryson Vs. Moe and the Single Plane Swing

Bryson DeChambeau has riveted spectators with his unique golf swing and style. He has introduced the golf world to the Single Plane address position that we have promoted for years.  And now he is a US Open Champion.

Interesting – all those skeptics of the single plane swing that said the single plane could not win on tour and was “shorter” than other golf swings…  wonder what they are saying now…?

So – now that the single plane swing has won a major championship and is one of the longest ball strikers on tour…  let’s talk a little about Bryson vs. Moe and their single plane swings.

Bryson’s swing is similar to Moe Norman in many ways, but we still think Bryson’s swing can be simplified even more and Moe’s golf swing is definitely easier on the back.

If you are to simplify the golf swing the following must occur.

You must –

  1. Reduce lateral movement for consistency.
  2. Reduce rotational movement and still produce speed.
  3. Reduce stress on the body parts throughout the motion.

One thing that has so many people intrigued about Bryson is his address position. Bryson begins the club shaft to where it runs through the middle of the back – also known as the Single Plane. The big difference in the pictures below are the spine positions.

Bryson stands slightly closer to the golf ball than Moe which results in a more upright spine angle but as you see from down the line view – the single plane set up as the shaft of the club lines up with the lower 1/2 of the trail arm.

Continuing the address in the pictures below (Bryson from a few year’s ago), Bryson had less secondary spine angle, side-bend, than Moe. This leads to straightening the lead leg, a lifting of the body and an over rotation of the torso through impact.

One reason that Bryson has less secondary tilt at address is because his stance width is  narrow. Moe’s stance width is double the width of Bryson’s (with a driver) which helps place the spine further behind the golf ball.

See the picture below – you will see that Bryson has widened his stance has he is working on increasing speed.

And consequently has increased his secondary spine tilt.

Below is Moe and Bryson at the top of their backswings. Moe on the left, has less torso rotation and maintains the side bend that he started with (this helps eliminate over-rotation).

Bryson on the right, rotates his torso more than 90 degrees in the backswing. The way Bryson generates speed is by extreme rotations and long levers. Bryson is 6’1″  and has a daily workout routine. The average age of a golfer in the United States is 59 years old. Not many are flexible and healthy enough to copy Bryson’s “young” rotational movements.

Now – see Bryson’s “updated” golf swing below.

As you see, Bryson is continuing the rotation of his torso, but he now has slightly more side bend.  This is due to his slightly wider stance at set up.

Below is the release position of Moe and Bryson. Highlighted in Bryson is the torso rotation and the lead foot. Since both of Bryson’s arms are still straight, this has forced the lead shoulder to continue rotating thus eliminating speed production from the arms and wrists. The lead foot has spun out caused by a straightened lead leg forcing stress onto the lower back.

With Moe, the lead foot is fully stable on the ground. The lead knee is flexed which takes the stress off of the back. The torso rotation is less as Moe’s lead arm has folded allowing the wrists to release.

Biomechanically, this is the safest way to position the body and the main reason that Moe never had pain.

Now – See below – (Picture of Bryson at US Open)

See Bryson’s trail foot (heel on ground through release) and see Bryson’s classic “toe up” position –

Trail foot down –

Lead Knee flexed

Trail shoulder to chin

Fully released and club toward target

As you see, Moe and Bryson are both in the single plane in their golf swings.   And as you see, even the single plane swing of Bryson is getting closer and closer to Moe’s single plane swing.

We believe the reason Bryson is able to hit the ball so far with accuracy is because of his single plane swing.

Bryon is revolutionizing the game with today’s young golfers – single plane, distance and accuracy – and we believe there is MUCH more to come!

A Great Lesson – Revisited

By Paul Monahan, GGA Mental Game Coach

Last week I (Paul Monahan) got one of the best lessons I’ve ever had on a golf course. But not for the reasons you might think. Here is that story:

I stood on the tee at the 17th hole at Eagle Creek in Lake Nona, Fl last Monday with all the confidence I thought I needed. The shot was 188 yards over water to a large, undulating green bunkered in the front and in back.

My decision was easy. I would go with 6-iron. Why? Well, I guess because once a couple years ago I flushed a 6-iron pin-high to a hole 186 yards away. And that sort of became my 6-iron yardage forever. (Isn’t that the way it works? ) What’s another two yards?

Well…

My playing companions that day were Chris Anderson, (a terrific Single Plane Swing golfer from Detroit, MI), along with GGA Master Instructors and superb ball-strikers Chandler Rusk and Trent White.

I had watched Chandler and Trent hit one solid shot after another over the course of our round, all while I had spent the first seven holes of our back nine thinning one shot after the next.  Chris wasn’t having his best round – but had also hit plenty of quality shots.

Importantly, as Trent would later observe, I had not reached a single green up to that point. In the words of Mike Tyson, I must have been in “bolivion.”

…short again!

At #17, we all discussed the shot we were about to hit. I quickly realized that Trent and Chris were planning to hit way more club than me. And Trent looked at me half-incredulous as if to say “You’re kidding, right?””

“But, …but, …but.” said my inner narrative. “I did hit that great 6-iron at Coffee Creek in Edmond, OK in September of 2016 after all.”

Sheepishly, I walked back to the cart and grabbed a 5-iron. Then proceed to slap at that one, hit it thin (again) and land it about ten yards short. (see map on right)

Trent and Chandler, ever the gentlemen chuckled a little and did a little #SMH. We all laughed at the irony. And we went on to finish the round.

Later, over dinner Trent gently broke the news to me that I had played an exceptionally clueless round of golf…and he wanted to know when I was going to learn to set the ego aside and play more club. (OK…my words, not his.)

For a brief moment, it hit me pretty hard. I’m the mental game coach – right? How could I be so unaware? (Isn’t awareness my thing?) But once I was able to settle in to Trent’s feedback more objectively, I was able to listen to him and actually hear what he had to say. I was able to tune in to the objective truth…and not my story.

The facts were this: I had shorted myself time and time again and never made the proper adjustments that I could have. The corrective action was simple, play with more awareness and most important: club up.

Sometimes the EGO gets in the way of our decision-making…and we are completely unaware of it. This ultimately impacts how we play the game. For me last week it looked like this: my ego would not settle for attempting that shot on #17 with anything less than a 6-iron because my self-worth was on the line!

In fact, every time I stood over the ball – I was convinced that I could pull off the shot I was hoping for, even though there was very little evidence that would be possible that day.

Trent and Chandler reminded me that I don’t have to be trapped in the idea that I’m “supposed to” hit a 6-iron 188 yards. That is not what makes me a better golfer…and it certainly does not prove I’m a better human being.

They helped me to see that our clubs are nothing but a set of tools or implements. And that golf is played well when you get good at choosing the right tool for the right job in that moment. The number on the bottom of the club doesn’t matter.

And they taught me (again) that staying tuned-in to the results I am producing on the course ( I call this “Objective Reality”) can help me make better decisions going forward. (Duh…right!?)

It was not my best round of golf ever…but it turned into an amazing lesson for me. (Thanks Trent and Chandler!)

So, get out there and have fun. But for heaven’s sake: Stay alert and CLUB UP!!

Hit More Fairways with Common Sense

There are practical and common-sense strategies that you can use on the course to help you improve your game and help you shoot lower scores.  One such tip is almost so simple you’ll probably scratch your head and wonder why you didn’t think of it yourself.

When you play the game enough, you eventually learn that driving the golf ball into the fairway is one of the most important aspects of playing well and having fun.  Alternatively, when you miss fairways and lose balls, golf can be a very frustrating and expensive game.  Here is a simple tip that can help you hit your driver straight, find your ball in the fairway and even save a few bucks.

This tip is actually two steps.  The first step is to select the place on the tee box where you have the best angle into the fairway.  The Second step is to use the ball as an alignment aid.

Step 1: Tee box “angle”

It might seem unfair, but many times golf course designers align tee boxes toward hazards and trouble. Average golfers often fall for this trick by unknowingly going to the middle of the tee-box without understanding that there is possibly a better option. By moving to one side of the tee or the other you can improve the “angle” of your shot – thus increasing the possibility of hitting the fairway.

For example, if you see that the hole is located on the right side of the green and the best place to approach the flag is from the left side of the fairway, teeing the ball on the right side of the tee box creates a better angle to land the ball in the left side of the fairway.

Once you select the proper side of the tee box, the second step is to align yourself correctly.

 Step 2: Align the Ball

Alignment to the target is difficult for most amateurs from especially from the tee. I often see amateurs hit really good shots but, since they are often mis-aligned, the ball flies into trouble.

Another tip to help you align accurately and hit more fairways is to use the ball as an alignment aid.  You will find that most golf balls have a logo or marking on them.  For example, the Titleist Pro-V1 has an arrow on the side and the Callaway Triple Track has three lines.  By using the logo or lines on the ball, you can aim the markings toward your intended target in the fairway.  The lines on the ball give you a sight-line and a visual reference toward your target.

Now, when you select the correct place on the tee box (tee angle) and align the logo on the ball to your intended target, you have increased your chance of hitting the fairway.  Now just get comfortable and swing and you are two-steps closer hitting more fairways and playing great golf.
