Trail Leg Brace – No Secrets, Just Good Mechanics

Trail Leg Brace – No Secrets, Just Good Mechanics

When it comes to the golf swing I don’t believe in secrets, in the sense that if you know a certain “something” that it makes it special. There is really nothing sacrosanct about the golf swing. Quite frankly, the swing is a series of body movements that result in a moving golf club.

Of course there are ideal movements and less than ideal movements and practice of the correct movements is paramount to success. I don’t think these movements, however, are “secrets”. They are simply ideal moves that produce a faster and more efficient movement of the golf club. Let’s just call them “ideal” rather than “secrets”.

One such ideal movement is that of how the trail leg functions in the golf swing.

moe-swing-seq-2

Take a look at this pictures. You can see clearly that Moe’s trail leg is braced at an angle. I call this a “frame”. This framework of Moe’s leg allows the trail hip to turn. The angle of his leg supports the turn. This is the opposite of what I call pelvis shift where the hips sway away from the target.

If there is anything that I might say is the absolute worst thing you can do in a golf swing, you might catch me saying “pelvis shift” is the worst thing.

Dr. Neal of golf biodynamics agrees. Pelvis shift causes a “reversing” of the spine and inhibits the rotation of the pelvis and torso. Here is a picture of Pelvis shift where the lower body has shifted to away from the target.

screen-shot-2017-01-06-at-9-16-17-pm

You can see that since the pelvis has slid over the trail leg it inhibits the shoulder and hip turn. Compare this to Moe’s braced trail leg and see the major difference in the position of the backswing.

As I said before, I don’t think there are secrets, just solid mechanics of movement.

Moe from Top View – A Rare Look

A rare look at the from the top view of Moe Norman shows us the simple geometry of a perfect single plane swing and the way Moe simplified the golf swing.  I call this the “grid”.

At address you can see the shoulder blade alignment and its relationship parallel to the target line where, as Moe Tilted the spine, the shoulders align to the target.  The lead arm is above the trail arm.  (line through shoulders).

The club aligns with the lead arm and is at an angle pointing to the lead shoulder.  The head is positioned behind the ball.

The club face, even thought is is placed well behind the ball is square to the target line and the lead foot is slightly rotated toward the target. (clubface arrow / line)

moe-overhead

Notice how the trial shoulder is back at address more than the front shoulder.

It is geometrically significant that the club shaft points through the lower spine (Yellow line)  at address, the exact location of the golf ball position (white line from ball to mid back) noting that this club to body relationship is in tact making it easy for Moe, as he rotates and moves his body forward, to lead the hands into impact.

The club pointing to to the lead side is due to the proper spine tilt at address allowing the upper spine to be behind the lower spine.

The club shaft pointing to the mid spine and back is significant as it shows how the Single Plane swing is lead sided where the lead hip is forward throughout the entire golf swing through impact.

Moe was not “pre-turned” as many people speculate.  Moe’s shoulders were actually parallel to the target.  The club sits behind the ball because it is in front of chest.  The club positioned behind the ball allowed the club to move immediately inside on the backswing. (conventional (typical) golfers have their shoulders open at address causing additional rotation to make a backswing).  This was another major factor to how Moe simplified the backswing by eliminating movement.

When you watch Moe Swing, you notice how the club moves on an inwards path and hands move to a position in front of the trail shoulder approximately shoulder height.  The Trail elbow moves to a position just behind a
round and in front of the trail hip.

As Moe transitions, you see the lower body move forward into the lead knee as his hands move down into impact where the hands are ahead of their original starting position.

Moe’s demonstrates the ideal rotation of the shoulders and hips showing  how the arms move down and lead the hands into impact creating the ideal motion to through impact where Moe produced maximum speed at the ideal place and time – making him the greatest and most consistent ball-striker to ever play the game.

Stop Setting Goals and Build a Plan? – Start Asking Questions

“Stop setting goals. Goals are pure fantasy unless you have a specific plan to achieve them.”

– Stephen Covey

Of course we need goals. Goals are the visions in the back of your mind of a potential future outcome. They inspire us and we enjoy thinking about them. However, goals don’t really help us do anything except give us something to admire and hope for. What good is hope if you aren’t willing to take action? I don’t want to talk about goals and wishes. I want to talk about an action plan.

As you sit at your computer, or on your phone or tablet, reading this I want you to think about 2017. Ask yourself a question.

“What can I do to make this my best golf year ever?”

The answer to this question requires you to think about actions. Let’s revise the question with a bit more detail.

“What can I do to improve my golf swing, gain a great putting stroke and achieve a 50% up and down percentage from 100 yards to the green?”

By asking questions with more detail your brain begins to act. It tries to come up with some answers. Let go one step further.

“What can I do to master the grip and address position to look exactly like Moe, learn to practice correctly, lose 10 lbs, and become 10% stronger?

Do you see how, by adding a numerical value to the specific outcome, it forces your brain to try to think of ways to measure your progress.

The purpose of this blog is to help you get clarity on your outcomes so you can get even clearer on the HOW you plan to achieve them. I want to help you go from merely making the wish “I want to play better golf” to “I want to be a 10 handicap, with a perfect single plane swing, great putting stroke and 50% Up and Down short game.

The more specific your goals become, the more your brain starts to formulate a plan. In many ways your brain doesn’t know the difference. It starts to act as though it was already real. This is a powerful tool for achievement. I have always been a planner and goal setter. More importantly I have always built action plans around my goals. I always detailed and measured my progress to ensure that I was heading in the right direction. Measuring is a key ingredient to motivation.

Many times our students set the goal of hitting the golf ball better. This goal is inadequate mostly because once you hit a good shot, according to your goal, you should be finished. In actuality everyone wants to become a better ball-striker and I would add that everyone should want to become a more consistent ball-striker which is an entirely different goal. It is more specific and requires another level of measurement.

Using Ball-flight as your measurement

When I team up with my coaches during schools we have plenty of conversations about our students.  We discuss improvements and how we can get better results. Our conversations often involve how the students measure progress. They seem to measure progress by ball-flight results.

If you’re going to measure your success according to ball flight, I believe you must also measure it against the swing that produced it. If a good swing produces a good shot then you are on your way to consistency. If a bad swing produces a good shot then I would argue that it is not a good shot – this is contrary to most instruction.

As a coach and teacher, I want great technique to produce great shots because it has the highest chance of consistency and long term outcomes. This requires a level of focus on technique and mechanics. Mechanics and technique requires some sort of measurement which lands us again at Moe’s technique. Do you see how it all comes down to modeling Moe?

Moe at address
Moe Norman at Address

Here’s a good one for you,

“How can I lose 10 lbs and achieve the perfect Moe Norman Single Plane Grip and Address in 4 weeks and have fun doing it?”

When you add the “have fun doing it” it give a little bit of motivation to actually start ASAP. It is these type of questions that set the brain in motion trying to formulate and answer.

I challenge you to ask yourself the above question.  “How can you lose 10 lbs. and achieve a perfect Single Plane Grip and Address Position in the next four weeks and have fun doing it?”

Here is a rare never before seen picture of Moe to help you. All you need to do is match the model. Make sure you look just like Moe from grip position, arm position, head position, leg position etc. Feel free to email me your answers to Toddg@moenormangolf.com. I want to hear from you. If you get really serious, I would like to set you up with one of our coaches to have built an action plan. More on the importance of coaches later.

Moe’s Swing – A Masterpiece of Movement

If you were an artist describing Moe Norman’s swing you would call it a masterpiece. You would see the geometry of the lines, the beauty of the movement and how there isn’t one wasted brush stroke. You would also see the architecture, the powerful club delivery and the economy of his movement.

Geometry, power and economy – three technical words to describe what Moe called a “Feeling” of greatness. So how do you go from the technical aspects of a golf swing to feel? To use the body as a tool and tech it to or swing effortlessly is a magical feat. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest accomplishments.

As you know, every artist who seems to be performing miraculous illusions on canvas has a few tricks up their sleeve. I believe Moe did as well. I believe his swing motion and movement was based on limitations. Yes, limitations. I believe that what you are seeing when you watch Moe – is a swing that won’t fail.

In other words, Moe is rotating in the backswing and rotating in the downswing as much as he can to his limits. Let me show you.

If I told you to make a backswing but do not let the trail knee move and keep your lead heel completely on the ground your backswing would look something like this:

moe-on-range-1997-white-shirt-2

You see how Moe’s lead foot is on the ground, his spine is tilted and his trail leg hasn’t moved. The trial leg has braced the rotation of his hips. Moe has limited the motion with certain aspects of his body. In doing so, this is the only place he can take the golf club in the backswing – he has reached a maximum.

If I asked you to rotate your hips in the downswing, you might ask “how much”. What if I said “As much as you can” but only under these two conditions: you must keep your trail foot on the ground and you must have you lead knee flexed all the way through your release and into your finish.

By giving you freedom to rotate to your maximum ability but placing limitations on certain aspects (what I call rules), you create the perfect environment for consistency and repeatability. Why? If you do it correctly you can’t over rotate or under rotate your hips and by allowing you to move to your maximum ability, you can amplify your speed.

Take a look at this picture: Moe is hitting into a flexed la knee creating a limit to his hip turn. His trail foot is on the ground These factors create a boundarmoe-clinic-2001-1y that allowed Moe to move maximal and masterfully.

Like all artists who understand the mechanics of their art, Moe limited the movement of his body – possibly making this a “secret” to consistency and accuracy.

2016 – A year to Remember

Like a 300 yard drive – the year has flown by. As we head into 2017 it is fun to look back at some of GGA’s greatest moments of 2016.

Additions to the GGA Team

First we have to recognize additions to the greatest golf instruction team in the world – Shannon Friday and Pat Jenkins. Both Shannon and Pat are highly respected professionals with years of teaching experience. Shannon has taken the role of the Director of the Single Plane Experience School Programs helping GGA expand our brand to more markets across the United States. With over 40 years of experience as one of the leading club fitters in the golf industry, Pat has helped bring Callaway Golf Fitting to the forefront of GGA. You will see and hear more from Shannon and Pat next year. I would like to take this time to give them a round of applause and a warm welcome to the Team.

Milestones of 1 Million  and 10,000 for GGA Schools

After 16 years, 1 Million people traveled through our websites to learn about Moe Norman and the Single Plane swing. As these people learned more, GGA reached a milestone of teaching over 10,000 people in golf schools. We are proud to be able to be able to say that we are changing the game “One Student at a Time” and helping golfers have more fun.  Here is the “GGA TEAM” promotional video we put together. I get pumped up and want to go teach more people every time I watch it!

Also, let me give a shout to Keenan Garett for putting together this great video. Thanks Keenan. (You will see Keenan behind the camera at our webinars. Well you won’t see him but he’s there).

Laws of Simplicity

If you’ve been riding along with me for the past few years, you know how much I’ve been researching Moe’s swing. I’ve been digging in to exactly why his swing is so great. I have been quantifying Moe’s greatness. I took what I learned and produced one of my favorite video projects ‘The Laws of Simplicity”. Working with one of my favorite people in the golf world Dr. Rob Neal of Golf Biodynamics, he helped me discover and explain Moe’s biomechanics in language that we can all understand. In the process of explanation, I get to take Single Plane Instructor Chandler Rusk and rip him apart!  Well, not really. I actually pull his conventional swing apart and then, with the help of Dr. Neal, I put him back together with a Single Plane. In the process I discovered that the swing has a proper order starting at the Foundation. Then you must work on the Positions, Transition and then you can finally Sequence it all together. I absolutely love this video and it was so much fun working with Dr. Neal.

You can see the video promo here:

Proof of Greatness – New Moe Norman Footage

In the same Laws of Simplicity video, there is a second video titled “Proof of Greatness”. Thanks to never before seen footage of Moe Norman provided by my good friend Mark Evershed, we get to see and hear Moe talk about his golf swing. In Proof of Greatness, Mark wanted to show the world exactly how great Moe really was. Moe consistently hits dozens of drivers into the fairway and fires at least fifty wedge shots within feet of the hole like the ball-striking machine I often saw when I played with him. You also get to see an “overhead” view of Moe’s swing. I guarantee this is the first video every taken of Moe from this angle. Here is a sample pic from the video of Moe hitting a four wood.

The GGA Short Game Masterclass

Students raved about the 6 week GGA Short Game Masterclass. Personally, I think this was one of my brother’s masterpieces of instruction. Why do I think it was a masterpiece? Because after 16 years of teaching with GGA my brother has truly perfected the art of teaching the short game. He holds nothing back and displays his talents in this amazing class. Tim’s instruction is beautifully clear, precise and effective. I believe that the GGA Masterclass is one of the best highlights of 2016.

Here is one video sample of the GGA Masterclass – the chipping checkpoints.

If you enjoy this video, you will love the entire class.

The Single Plane Trainer

It took a few years but in November we introduced one of our most demanded products – the Single Plane Trainer. The Single Plane Trainer is a trainer developed after spending years attempting to Model Moe Norman’s swing movement. My goal was to find a way to “feel” what Moe felt. In doing so I discovered that there was a relationship between the body and the golf club.  I labeled this connection of club to the body – the pivot point. I discovered this point by using a broom stick to attach the “stick” to my body. When I attached it correctly I finally felt the connection – and the movement exactly matched Moe Norman’s golf swing. Training this pivot point connection became the core of GGA position training but holding a broomstick or piece of PVC had a problem. It didn’t help feel Moe’s grip position. The Broomstick, PVC and Training Grip evolved into one of GGA’s greatest training tools – the GGA Single Plane Trainer. The GGA Single Plane Trainer is definitely GGA’s product of the year for 2016

Check out Tim teaching the benefits and use of the trainer here:

GGA Australia

G’day Mate. We couldn’t finish the year without going down under. This year I took Moe Norman around the world, launching GGA Australia. It just so happened that the National Golf Publication of Australia put Moe on the cover of their magazine. With the help of our Australian Team of Ron and Blade Cruickshank, GGA has now been “hands-on” with almost 100 students in the Gold Coast of Australia. Now we can reach the thousands Aussies who are Moe Norman Fans as we move the schools further north to Melbourne and Sydney. Here is picture of the cover of the magazine and the video of my interview while I was doing an exhibition in Australia.

Screen Shot 2016-09-17 at 7.24.03 PM

These were just a few of the highlights of an incredible year. I can’t with for 2016 to get started. I’m headed to Orlando in January – I hope to see you there. Maybe YOU can be a highlight for 2017.
